Help for My Obese Child – Give Your Child a Positive Food Experience

In today’s world it is virtually impossible to avoid all the ads for high sugar, high fat junk food. It is everywhere we turn; ads on TV, billboards, placement products in movies and our school cafeterias. Even many of the health foods offered are not as healthy as they claim. This is a lot to go up against. The task of providing your child a positive food experience can seem overwhelming. But it can be done if you are determined to provide your child a healthy lifestyle, free from the obesity epidemic that is growing in America.

With few exceptions obesity is a product of the lifestyle we live. The obesity lifestyle is not hard to define. It includes a diet of high sugar and fat with little fiber. Most often a diet low in real food and high in processed foods. This is coupled with low levels of physical activity with more and more time in front of the TV or computer. Play time is spent with video games instead of playing any number of games out-of-doors.

Much of our lives are organized around food. We wake up and first thing is breakfast. Then you either pack a lunch for your child or give them money to buy the school offered fare. Then it is dinner. Try to make the breakfast and dinner a family affair. Slow down enough to enjoy a meal together and socialize. Learn what they did in school, play games, let them learn from you.

Stay away from processed foods as much as possible. Processed foods tend to be high in sugar and low in the natural nutrients needed for a healthy life. Have plenty of fruit and vegetables available on hand to eat for snacks.

Eat smaller portions of healthy food. Natural healthy foods tend to be lower in sugar and higher in natural fiber. This will make you feel full with less food while providing more nutrients to your body. Eating slow will also let the full feeling develop before you overeat.

Let your kids help in the food preparation. Depending on age, they can add spices, stir the pot, set the table, make salad dressing or cut vegetables. The more they feel a part of the meal the better they will feel about eating it.

Look into what your school serves in the cafeteria. Just because it is USDA approved does not mean it is healthy. You should talk to school officials about their lunch program and if needed prepare a healthy lunch for your child.

Don’t use food as a reward or deny it as a punishment. Eating should be a positive experience. Just try to make meal times fun, loving and nurturing experiences with healthy foods and your child will come away with a positive feeling towards healthy foods.

Be adventurous with your food. Try new things. Learn to cook vegetables with spices. Too often vegetables are boiled and served as a side dish for meat. They can be much more than that.

If you want your child to develop healthy positive eating habits, you need to do this also. You can’t expect your child to eat an apple for a snack if you are munching on a corn dog. If you buy your breakfast at McDonald’s, why would you expect your child to do differently? If you want your child to develop a positive food experience you need to be totally committed to this for yourself as well as your child. There should be no exceptions in your household.

It is never too late to start this process. Just this week, an article appeared in the weekly Parade magazine about Drew Carey who at age 52 changed his lifestyle to lose 77 lbs by eating healthy and exercising. He cured his diabetes and now has the energy to keep up with his young child. But the earlier you start, the sooner your child will be able to enjoy the benefits of a healthy lifestyle.

It’s actually quite alarming just how many people put themselves at risk simply by being overweight, and of course there’s only one reason for most of them being overweight, and that is because they don’t eat a healthy diet. With that said, more and more people are starting to become health conscious nowadays, and they’re starting to pay more attention to their diet and their level of fitness.

The Key to a Healthy Diet

The first thing to remember regarding a healthy diet is that your diet should include some foods from all the different food groups, and of course a healthy diet also needs to be accompanied by regular physical exercise. If the opinion of health professionals is anything to go by, then it would appear that many people have a hard time sticking to a healthy diet, even though it doesn’t necessarily have to be difficult. The biggest culprit of course, is the fact that so many people lead hectic lifestyles nowadays, and this usually results in stressful situations which make it difficult to focus on eating a healthy diet.

The bottom line however, is that you can stay with a healthy diet irrespective of how hectic and busy your lifestyle is. Remember, if you really want to get fit and live a healthy live then nothing is impossible.

For example, health professionals recommend that you begin by including a wide variety of foods in your diet, and these should come from all the different food groups. This in itself forms a solid foundation for avoiding junk foods, fast foods, and processed foods, all of which can lead to you gaining weight. Additionally, you also need to focus on restricting yourself with regards to foods which contain a lot of fat, sugar, and salt. It is also advisable for you to weigh yourself on a regular basis in order to determine whether or not your body is actually getting all the nutrients it needs.
